My work is informed by a holistic approach that respects the relational, interconnected nature of human experience. Together, we will explore the emotional, cognitive, physical, sociocultural, historical, and spiritual factors impacting your life. I have had a lifelong passion for psychotherapy. I have taken steps in my education and professional career to ensure that I am as prepared as possible to engage in the work with integrity and purpose. To this end, I have a Masters degree in Counselling Psychology, I am certified as an Emotionally Focused Therapist with a specialization in couples and families, and I am a candidate in Jungian Psychoanalysis, a rigorous 6-year training program in individual psychotherapy. I am also part of a crisis assessment team in a hospital Emergency Room. As a psychotherapist, I am deeply aware that psychotherapy is a reciprocal process. I expect the same from myself as I do from you, and as such, my training involves my own participation in psychotherapy and I maintain supervision to ensure that you receive the best care possible. I am constantly engaged with the most current research in mental health, and I write academically as well as participate in and present at conferences.

I am a Registered Psychotherapist in downtown Toronto. I work with adults who may be dealing with depression, anxiety, stress, trauma, relationship issues, gender and sexual identity (gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans). I have background in music, and the study of philosophy informs all of my work. In every life there comes a time when it's clear some changes need to be made. Or something happens that throws all the ways we're used to doing things up in the air and we don't know what to do. Or we realize that something about our relationship is really not working and we can't clearly say why. Psychotherapy can help you through these challenges so you can come to a clearer understanding of who you are, what you've done, what you want and what it all means. You might feel depressed, or anxious or alone. You might find yourself questioning the way you are living your life, the ways you relate to loved ones, the ways you express your sexuality or your creativity, or even questioning the meaning of life. You may have lived through trauma, divorce, neglect, abuse and psychotherapy can be a good way to begin to heal.

I've been a counsellor in private practice for since 2006. I provide marriage counselling, individual counselling and life-transition coaching with a strong Integrative Psychodynamic Humanistic Existential focus. For marriage counselling I specialize in break-up prevention and (re)integration. For individual counselling I specialize in counselling for depression and anxiety. What does this mean for you? My approach is focused on fostering individuality, personal growth, rekindling passion for life by finding and celebrating each person's unique strengths and challenges while working towards integrative thought, mood and behaviour that are at the root of your challenges and distress. Through a gentle yet direct approach I facilitate personal discovery of deeply entrenched patterns and beliefs that are hindering your ability to appreciate life as it happens. Using an integrated variety of modalities including when appropriate: didactic, dialectic, narrative, CBT, NLP, guided imagery, and Ericksonian techniques, clients see me for problems related to depression, anxiety, stress, sleep, fears, intimacy and relationship related issues. Overcoming the root causes that may be holding back your progress, move beyond coping and managing into near effortless embodiment of your new and more integrated Self without changing who you are as an essential person as you embark on your journey to wellness and fulfillment. Approach Over the last 20+ years, I have worked with a variety of clients and studied philosophy and psychology based on many theories and traditions, from symptom/results oriented approaches (such as CBT) via depth-psychology based approaches (such as Freud, Jung, Adler, Rogers) to spiritual and religious based approaches and traditions (such as Christian, Hindu, Islam, Buddhist and Taoist). I have spent much time weeding out the belief-oriented portions of these philosophies to create a results-oriented, logic-based approach that is easily integrated into the philosophy of our current times. (i.e. by people like you and me who were born in modern times and grew up with hybrid cars, iPhones, Swiffer commercials on HD-TVs and clever advertising that tells us to buy more while eating organic and recycling.)

The core of my work is the relationships that form between myself and my clients. A focus of my practice is on sexual issues including sexual abuse, problematic sexual behaviours, sexual trauma, gender issues, the use of internet porn, shame, fetishism, low and high sexual interest, issues of pain, difficulties with sexual function, and the embodied residues of sexual trauma. Some of the other difficulties I work with are: anxiety, depression, loss/grief, relationship issues, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive/compulsive behaviours, low self esteem, common dissociation, ‘checking out’ as a coping mechanism, and the experience of dissociative identity disorder (DID). My eclectic approach blends together many different styles of engagement. I work with individual adults and adolescents in a safe, supportive environment paying close attention to overwhelming thoughts, emotions, and sensations. With 25 years experience as a registered massage therapist, four years of training in emotion-oriented body work, and eight years of training as a psychodynamic psychotherapist, my practice reflects my knowledge of how emotions are often held, and expressed unconsciously in our bodies. My education and training includes: a Guelph University sex therapy intensive course, psychodynamic psychotherapy training at The Centre for Training in Psychotherapy (CTP), a BSc in Psychology from the University of Toronto, and massage therapy training from Sutherland and Chan. I will be presenting a workshop at the Annual Guelph Sexuality Conference in June 2015 entitled “Ecstatic Pleasures/Deep Shame — Unraveling the Dark Fantasies that Turn You On”. I am a clinical member of The Canadian Association for Psychodynamic Therapy and have more than 20 years experience of personal psychotherapy.

Psychology and psychotherapy have been my passions since I was a young adolescent. I began to read Freud and Jung at 14 years of age, before discovering one of the first child therapists, Melanie Klein, whose theories about the problems of children fascinated me. Since I was a young child I have always been curious and reflective about why people do what they do, and psychology and psychotherapy have opened up many paths of understanding myself and others for over 20 years. The psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott once said that some people are born to do this work – they have a feeling for it “in their bones” – while others approach it from a more academic perspective. Having been involved in therapy as a struggling adolescent, before doing an intensive psychoanalysis as part of my training at the Toronto Child Psychoanalytic Program, it would be fair to say that I was destined to do what I am doing, and that the work of therapy is deeply embedded in me. Due to these personal experiences, I was a student of the therapy field long before I ever entered a school.
