There are many reasons I love with yoga – for the way it makes me feel, the rehab it provided after a MVA, for creating space for me to be a better wife, mother and person...the list goes on. But the real benefits of yoga come to me through learning to be of service to others. I specialize in two areas; Yoga for GolfersTM and Yoga Thrive (yoga for those with cancer). I love both areas as they have both spurred me to a deep understanding of functional movement and anatomy. Thanks to thousands of students, I’ve learned to color outside the lines and appreciate my deep seeded philosophy that bodies, not poses, have alignment. Since 2007 I’ve had the immense privilege to work alongside Dr. Nicole Culos-Reed of the University of Calgary and her incredible Yoga Thrive program. She is a leader in her field of research based programs studying the effects of physical activity and yoga during cancer. Since 2008 I’ve developed protocols for her research team including a 7 week program for all cancer types, a 12 week program for children with cancer, and a 12 week program for men with prostate cancer. I lead the Yoga Thrive Teacher Training Program and have been blessed to share our amazing program with over 80 yoga instructors across Canada and the U.S. I began teaching in 2007 and immediately starting teaching students who had received a cancer diagnosis. My hope, through my teachings, is to empower and educate my students to a safe and rejuvenating practice during the challenging time of treatments, surgery, stress and for many, fear. Navigating cancer is beyond hard – for many it’s one of the most challenging times in their life. When a student has cancer it’s not the time to “workout” or exercise at vigorous levels. It’s a time to do a bit every day, watch how your body responds both physically and mentally and create a toolbox. It’s also a time to bring students back to the realization that they are not just cancer patients, but people who have cancer. It’s a powerful distinction for many. I love practicing yoga, helping teachers learn to “see” the body in front of them and I especially love introducing beginners to a safe and empowered yoga practice. I am most passionate to simply be of service, particularly to those with cancer and share the gifts of yoga. I’ve been blessed to have many amazing instructors, though my greatest teachers are my students.

I arrived in Vancouver in 1996. I saw blue sky, breathed clean air, and immediately sensed freedom and opportunity. I fell in love with Canada instantly. Challenges were routine. I could not find work. I could not communicate. I failed an interview for a dish washing position. I feared public situations because of my language barrier. I overcame it, and studied for eight months to learn English. I next attended massage training, began a business, and soon after, yoga found me, but this time re-united with my old friend: joy of music, rhythm and body movement. In 1997 A very dear friend who I will never forget offered me free basement commercial space. I used it to begin my first yoga studio. The newfound outlet for the expression and flow which came from my heart grew rapidly. As the yoga grew, so did many beautiful friendships. As I look back on that little basement studio which continued 13 years, those years forged the skills and foundation of my yoga practice, and showed me how to maintain and grow a yoga business. In our life experience we touch many lives and find many friends. Few people in my life have provided a more meaningful place for change and growth as did that dear friend who gave me that free practice space. He selflessly gave a gift which I feel a duty to ‘pay it forward’. Yes, it may be said we need to survive and earn a living. But to me, I am honoured with my struggles and life experiences, and am also honoured to create opportunities and places for change in others now. I believe in the miracle of Yoga.

Uttamjeet Kaur describes the call to practice Kundalini Yoga as a voice impossible to ignore. The call came for her in 2010. As it is for many, awareness of the practice came to her as she found herself working through life changes and the desire to examine herself on a deeper level. Completely different from other styles of yoga, she was attracted to the unique facets of Kundalini Yoga. Uttamjeet recalls her first class as an experience like no other. She knew instantly that she was to answer the call to become a Kundalini Yoga Teacher. Uttamjeet completed her Kundalini Yoga teacher training at Hacienda de Guru Ram Das Ashram, home of Yogi Bhajan, in New Mexico. During her time at the Ashram, she became aware that the next step in the journey was to open a space for Kundalini Yoga. Studio Sat Nam became a reality in 2014 and her vision for the studio continues to be to provide a sacred and safe space dedicated to the practice of Kundalini Yoga.

I was introduced to yoga on my first trip to India in 1996 and I have never looked back! It has been the only constant in a life full of change. It has provided the roots and grounding that I have needed during the ups and downs of this journey called life…. Ashtanga Yoga was my passion for many years, the beauty and intensity of this practice was what my body and mind seemed to crave. Four babies later, my body and mind both crave something different…. Today my passion is yoga in general, just being in my body, connecting to my breath and slowing down. I love Yin Yoga as well as a mixture of Yin and Yang… Making time for sitting in meditation and pranayama, help to bring balance and serenity to my life. I really love the stillness that comes during practice, the connectedness that is only possible through that stillness, the peace and serenity that you can reach when you aren’t living in the mind…. Connecting to the present moment through my practice is one of my most treasured and greatest gifts. It has helped me through bigger challenges than I had ever hoped to know or experience. This is a place that I teach from, as, in a sense, it saved me… Letting go of the past, not worrying about the future, but being right here, right now, in this moment. I’ve had the honour and privilege of studying with many amazing people along the way, including Sri K Patthabi Jois, Tim Miller, Ron Reid, David Williams, Nancy Gilgoff, Eddie Modestini and Nicki Doane, David Swenson, Fiona Stang and Julian Deck, Darby, and Rameen Peyrow. I am eternally grateful for my three amazing children (and the one that has already passed on), they inspire me every single day and keep me real. They help me to be more patient and grounded, or at least give me good reason to work on it! I also must mention my husband Alastair here as well…. Without his love and devotion, we would not have our beautiful studio, as he has put everything into building it from the ground up since 2007! I am especially grateful to him for all of his dedication and belief in what we are doing!! I am incredibly appreciative for the beautiful yoga community that has blossomed around us at Santosha….. This wonderful community is a constant source of inspiration to all of us! Together we have seen many changes, and together, I am sure, we will see many more! Every day is a new day and every practice a new practice, for that I am thankful. The present moment is the greatest gift that we all have and that is where I am always trying to be. “He who binds to himself a Joy, Does the winged life destroy, He who kisses the Joy as it flies, Lives in Eternity’s sunrise.” ~The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying
